10 reasons why you should switch from Internet Explorer 6

"Every so often, people ask me why they should upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, the newest version of the venerable Microsoft web browser. They're happy with Internet Explorer 6—it does what they want it to do and they're comfortable using it. Some are nervous about upgrading because they feel they don't have time to learn a new way of doing things. Others believe that because they only use their computers to check their e‑mail and visit "safe" sites, they don't need to upgrade. (...) For me, the most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world." (Sandi Hardmeier, Microsoft MVP)

10 reasons to switch from Internet Explorer 6:

1. Switch to a more secure browser.
2. Get a faster browser.
3. Web pages will look better.
4. Use a browser that it's not closely integrated with your operating system.
5. Try a browser that has native support for Ajax.
6. Open less windows by using tabs.
7. Get a search box without installing toolbars.
8. Get anti-phishing protection.
9. Web developers will thank you.
10. If IE6 is no longer a popular browser, developers will spend more time releasing new features.

How to found your lost USB pen drive

Now a days USB pen drives are becoming very popular but the disadvantage with them is their frequency of getting lost.I myself had lost my 2 Kingston pen drives. But now you can prevent yours from getting lost by using a free utility called USB Lost and Found which can be used on Windows 2000/XP/Server/Vista.

USB Lost and Found is a free tool to setup your USB drive to keep unauthorized users from keeping your USB drive if it were to be lost. USB Lost and Found has a method of Message which when the user tries to use your USB drive it comes up with a message box that tells them to return it, along with your contact information, and denies access to the USB drive. This could be useful if the USB was missed from you and someone gets it, he/she can contact you to get it back to you.

Its free version has limited protection because it provides protection by only one method while pro has more than one.The PRO version which comes for $3.49 has another method called lock down.Lock Down immediately locks the user’s computer when the USB drive is accessed, covering the whole screen and denying access. When the computer is in lockdown mode, hotkeys such as Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Shift+Esc don’t work. Only Ctrl+Alt+Del would work and you can shutdown/restart/logoff your computer.

Kaspersky's Malaysian Site Gets Hacked

Well that doesn't sound great but its true.Kaspersky's Malaysian Site Gets Hacked.Report says
The official Malaysian Kaspersky Antivirus’s website has been hacked yesterday by a Turkish cracker going by the handle of “m0sted”. Along with it, the same cracker hacked also the official Kaspersky S.E.S. online shop and its several other subdomains. The attacker reported “patriotism” as the reason behind the attack and “SQL Injection” as the technical way the intrusion was performed.

Both websites has been home page defaced (sic) as well as several other secondary pages. The incident, though appearing a simple website defacement, might carry along big risks for end-users because from both the websites, evaluation copies of the Kaspersky Antivirus are distributed to the public. In theory, the attacker could have uploaded trojanized versions of the antivirus, infecting in this way the unaware users attempting a download from a trusted Kaspersky’s file repository (remember the trojan in the Debian file repository?).
Though i don't know much about SQL injection but i heard about it when RIAA website also get hacked.Any one can raise question about that if these website belonging to world's most reputed anti virus and internet security service provider can get hacked then guess who is safe on internet.

Here is what expert says "Both of the websites that were attacked are managed using third-party hosting. The sites have never been publicly accessible as they are still under construction.

Since the websites are still being developed, they haven’t yet been fully secured. Naturally appropriate security features will be implemented before the sites go live.

This situation can be compared to a thief breaking into an empty house that is still under construction and has not been yet properly secured. Breaking in is therefore an easy task, but in such cases there is nothing to steal or damage – the websites are not yet live and are not linked to other Kaspersky Lab corporate websites. It seems clear that the attacker’s only motive was to attract attention.

This attack could therefore not harm users in any way. Additionally, it will not be possible to use this attack method once the websites have been officially launched."

That may act as sign of some kind of relief to internet user.

Protect your USB drive content by Lockngo

If your pen drive or USB drive is containing some kind of important or classified data and you are worried that some one else could see that data if your USB drive is handed to your friend or some one with which this USB drive is shared.Well this is very obvious in this case the most important thing you will wish to some how hide that data on that USB drive.

Now you can protect your USB drive data by locking and hiding it on the USB drive by using a small utility lockngo.Lockngo is a removable media protection software. You can download the demo version of Lockngo which lets you hide files on your removable drive for free but you cannot set the password protection over your files on your portable drive in the free version of Lockngo.

Lockngo handles the data that is stored in the removable media in a way that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to retrieve even by using hacker’s low level raw reading utilities,it is that simple.

This software works for almost all the pendrives, memory cards and all other portable devices which lets you store the data.

How to keep USB drive safe when attached to virus infected computer system

I have faced this situation many many times. When i have to use my pen drive, which is already containing some important data that i can't afford to loose, on a shared computer system that is probably infected with viruses, i always found myself in a dilemma. If i use my USB drive on that virus infected computer system then that virus will be automatically transmitted to my pen drive also and then it might make my pen drive unreadable or data on pen drive might be lost etc. depending upon the virus activity.

But now i have found a solution for this situation. If i make my USB drive non writable then any kind of data can't be written to it,means if virus infected computer is going to transmit any virus to pen drive then it can't be written to it as USB drive is write protected.

ThumbScrew is a freeware that can be used to write-protect your USB drive so that malware or any kind of unwanted program or data from host computer doesn’t spread to your USB Drive. For using it download and launch the app, right click the System Tray icon and choose ‘Make USB Read Only’. Now nothing could be written to the USB Drive, you’re completely protected from infections spreading to your disk from your computer.

Now your pen drive is protected on that shared system but i still recommend you to use a quality anitvirus software updated regularly as your system contains more important data than a pen drive.

How to save your orkut account from getting hacked

Previously i wrote about how to hack orkut accounts this time i am with a guide on how to save your orkut account from getting hacked. For this lets go through the login security system used by Google for its application like orkut.

Google uses a 4 Level Orkut login which makes it difficult to hack using brute force method.
1st Level Security-SSL or 128 bit secured connection
2nd Level Google account checks for cookie in the sytem of user
3rd Level Google provides a redirection to the entered User information
4th Level Google doesn't use conventional php/aspx/asp coding so impossible to attack using input validation attack!!

It is not an easy task to break this security! But still some people manages to get access to other accounts. The question concerned is How they do it? Many of them just use simple tricks that be fool users and then they them self leak out their password. Here are some points you need to take care of, to prevent your Orkut account being hacked!

Phishing Attack is the most popular way of stealing other's password. Popular by the name of fake login (among those who knows it!!) the users land on a page where they are asked for their login information and they enter their username and password thinking it to be a real page but actually it is other way round. It submits all the details entered to the programmer or the coder.

Community Links: Many times you are provided with a link to a community in a scrap. Read the link carefully, It may be something like http://www.okrut.com/Community.aspx?cmm= 22910233 OKRUT not ORKUT. Clicking on this link will take you to a fake login page and there you loose up your password.

Orkut New Features: I have come across a page that looks like they are giving the user a choice of selecting new features for orkut with your ID and password, of course!! When user submit the page, there goes his ID and password mailed to the coder.

Java script: You must have seen the circulating scraps that asks you to paste this code in your address bar and see what happens! Well sometimes they also leak out your information. Check the code and if you are unsure of what to do, then I recommend not to use it.

Primary mail address: If by some means a hacker came to know password of your email address, which users normally keeps as their primary mail address in their Orkut account, then hacker can hack Orkut account by simply using USER ID and clicking on 'forget password'.This way Google will send link to the already hacked primary email id to change the password of the Orkut account. Hence the email hacker will change your Orkut account's password. Hence your Orkut account hacked too.

So a better thing would be to keep a very unknown or useless email id of yours as primary email id so that if the hacker clicks on 'Forgot password' the password changing link goes to an unknown email id i.e. not known to the hacker.

These are the some of the methods which can alarm you about the possibility of account hacking. So its better to play safe.

My 15 must have windows softwares

Almost all computer users who spent most of the time in front of their systems has a typical pattern of their software uses. Most of them installs a set of softwares on their systems each and every time they install operating system. These software falls in the category of MUST HAVE softwares for that particular user. Here is my list of must have softwares for Microsoft windows xp/vista (I have dual boot).

1:For security:Kaspersky Internet security

There are a lot of quality free Antivirus software out there, but this has been one area where I am not willing to take risk by opting for a free alternative. I’ve had bad experience using some of the free alternatives and even some of the paid ones such as Norton gave me a lot of trouble.

Kaspersky takes the least amount of memory and CPU and also does the best job when finding/detecting viruses. No wonder its rated in the top in almost all the Antivirus reviews.

Kaspersky Internet security has a lot of options which enables the user to use it efficiently and Internet security also includes the features of kaspersky antivirus.

2:Web browser:Mozilla FireFox (Too obvious)
Well its a much talked about issue and i prefer FireFox because of many many reasons like security, crash handling, freeware, tonnes of very productive plugins etc.Downloading link for FireFox is also provided on the top of Google custom search box in this page.

3:Compression:Winrar
This is a shareware application, but I do have a registered copy of WinRar and its way better than WinZip. Especially while handling the CAB or the JAR files I find WinRar very useful. 7Zip is a free alternative if you don’t want to shell out money for WinRar.

4:Download manager :Internet download manager:
When it comes to download managers, you again have a lot of options like orbit, free DM etc.. I have tried most of them and have finally settled on Internet Download Manager. It has the nice user interface and does not run any Ads.

5:Feed manager :Feed demon:

I hate web based RSS readers, they are slow and UI is sluggish compared to the desktop based readers. Of the desktop based readers, I love Feed Demon for its simple yet powerful user interface and the synchronization feature. What more, its free and a must have if you don’t like Google Reader. For web based applications i prefer Google reader.

6:Media player:Vlc
This is mostly because i hate the inbuilt Windows Media Player.I end up seeing the “codec” error almost every time I play a video.

This is when VLC Media Player comes to my rescue. It’s a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, etc) as well as DVDs, VCD’s, and various streaming (RTSP) protocols.List of VLC media player keyboard short cuts.

7:IM client :Gtalk:
Google Talk is the only IM client that I use.Yes I’m done with Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.Google Talk is light on memory and has almost all the features I need from a IM client; presence, auto save chat history, sharing files etc. And I love the way it delivers IM even though I have logged in from more than one location.

8:Cleaner :CCleaner:

This application might not be required as soon as you re-install the OS, but does come in handy over the period of time. The default “Disk cleanup” feature in Windows does almost nothing compared to CCleaner And yes it does the cleanup work pretty fast too.It also cleans the registry and fixes the errors very fast.

9:Text editor:TextPad:
TextPad saves you the pain of installing an editor for every other file format.Want to open a CSS file, PHP file, HTML file, a properties file or even a file with no extension, TextPad comes in handy. You can also try equally weighted applications for this like Notepad++ and PSPad which are also nice.

10:Torrent client :µTorrent:

If you download a lot of stuff from torrent a lightweight Bit Torrent client is a must.Even though I don’t download much data from Torrent sites, I have used µTorrent a couple of times.

The install size is pretty small and even the memory usage is pretty low compared to the other BitTorrent clients.

11:PDF reader:PDF xchange viewer:

There are so many freeware are available for viewing PDF files but i prefer PDF xchange viewer. This small utility is very quick to respond, allows you to edit, mark, copy etc content. You can put stiky notes and it also remembers the last page when the files was closed.I use its portable version which is just a exe file and you just associate it with pdf files. No need to install and all that.

12:FTP client:Filezilla:

There are a lot of quality FTP clients for windows and I have settled on FileZilla for its simplicity. You have a site manager feature, if you do connect to a lot of different FTP servers and transferring of files between the server and client is damn easy (Even drag and drop onto the server is supported).

13:SFTP and SCP client:WinSCP:
WinSCP is a free SFTP and SCP client for Windows. Unlike FTP clients, there aren’t many quality clients out there supporting SCP on Windows. When I edit any of the files on my server I always do it via WinSCP. Editing a file on the server opens the same on a SCP editor and a save on the file automatically puts back the file on the server.

WinSCP also has come in handy for me to transfer files between my iPhone and the PC.The good thing about WinSCP is that it does come with a standalone version which can be copied and run from your USB drive.

14:Blog editor:Windows live writer:

Almost every blog writer has fell in love with this Microsoft product.Live Writer simplifies the task of writing and publishing posts.

15:File copy application:Tera copy:

Oh ! This is a awesome tool for windows user for copying files or transferring data in system. It replaces the default windows file copy system and copies the files very very fast and without over burdening the CPU.Its a very small application and it uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times and asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. It even allows you to pause and resume the file transfer.

This is my list what about yours? If you feel that your list is different then let me know by writing comments and if you like the post then feel free to stumble or digg it.

E-mail addresses containing numbers are less prone to spammers !

Spammers get a hold of e-mail addresses in roughly a zillion ways. When you buy something at a small, lesser-known online store there's a decent chance they will sell your address to spammers. Even if it's a big, reputable store that gets your cash, the store's records could still be stolen or leaked. Sign up for a newsletter? Your address could certainly get sold. Ever write comments in blogs or discussion forums that display your e-mail address? Spammers have tools that "scrape" those addresses. That is, they process the text on the page and strip out anything that looks like an e-mail address.

In any of the above scenarios—and plenty more—it doesn't matter what your address is. The one technique your number idea could foil is what is called a "dictionary attack." The spammers get a list of common first names, a list of common last names, and a list of ISP e-mail domains they want to try. Then they generate all possible combinations and fire off a gazillion messages (at next to no cost). Anyone unwary enough to respond gets moved to a list of "live" addresses that can be sold to other spammers. Yes, an address like Joe142857Blow@domain.com would be more resistant to this attack than plain JoeBlow@domain.com.

In general, when you change your e-mail address, it takes the spammers a while to catch up. So any change, with or without a number, will bring temporary relief. If you also change your habits to guard this new e-mail address more carefully, it will take the spammers longer to get you back on their lists. But sooner or later they always seem to find us.

What if you forgot your windows login password? 7 password recovery tools

Sometimes it happens, you can forgot your systems login password and now unable to login, well you can also forgot other password too but in this post we will talk about only windows xp login password. There are few options by following which you can login into your system without reinstalling windows.

1.Password reset Disk:This is not a tool, this is just a precautionary measure that you take to avoid this condition.Windows itself allows you to create a password reset disk which you can use if in the case you forgot the password. To create a password reset disk follow these steps.

1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.In Control Panel, click User Accounts.
3.In the User Accounts pane, click the account that you want to work with.
4.Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password to start the Forgotten Password Wizard, and then click Next.
5.Insert a blank, formatted disk into drive A, and then click Next.
6.In the Current user account password box, type the password for the user account that you chose in step 3, and then click Next.
7.When the Progress bar reaches 100% complete, click Next, and then click Finish.

You can use this at starting time of system at log on screen. But this can be used only if yo have created it before forgetting password ,afterwards it is of no use.

2:ERD commander:You can use this tool for booting the PC and afterwards it takes the control and let you set the new password for the user accounts and solves the problem. It can boot dead systems directly from CD and it has easy, familiar Windows-like interface.More info

Download [ERD commander]

3:Trinity Rescue Kit:It can be run from a bootable CD, USB device or network over PXE.You can start once the message “Welcome to Trinity..” appears on the screen. Use the command winpass -l to list all usernames of the system. Now enter winpass -u . This will lead to a series of dialogs, make sure to press n when asked if you want to deactivate Syskey. You are given a choice to (1) remove the password, (2) set a new password or (3) make the selected user an administrator of the system.
But the sad thing is that the file system is based on Linux which means that you will not see the usual c,d,e drives like you do in Windows. Hda, hdb, hdc are the hard drives connected to your computer and the numbers behind are the partitions of those hard drives. Hda1 for instance means the first partition of the first hard drive which is usually the location of the Windows installation while hdc2 would refer to the second partition of the third hard drive.

download [trinity rescue kit

4:Ophcrack:The Ophcrack Windows password cracker is by far the best free Windows password recovery tool available. It's fast and easy enough for a first time password cracker with a basic knowledge of Windows.

With Ophcrack, you don't need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost passwords. Simply visit the site, download the free ISO image, burn it to a CD and boot to the CD. The Ophrack program starts, locates the Windows user accounts, and proceeds to recover (crack) the passwords - all automatically.

Download [Ophcrack]

5:John The Ripper:John the Ripper is a very popular free password recovery tool that can be used to find Windows account passwords. While the password recovery application itself is free, the wordlists used by John the Ripper to discover passwords do cost and are required for the software to work. There may be free wordlist alternatives that work with John the Ripper but I have not tested them.

John the Ripper is operated at the command line making it a password cracking tool reserved for the very advanced user.

Download [John the ripper]

6:LCP:LCP is yet another free and very effective password recovery software tool for Windows.
Like Cain & Abel, LCP is a standard Windows program you download from LCPSoft's website and install inside of Windows.

LCP can be a little intimidating to those new to password recovery tools so some prior knowledge is very helpful to avoid even bigger problems with your PC.

Download [LCP]

7:Cain & Abel:Cain & Abel is a free, fast and effective Windows password recovery tool.
Unlike Ophcrack, Cain & Abel is a more traditional software application and does require access to Windows under a particular user account. Due to this fact, Cain & Abel is often a valuable resource to recover passwords to accounts other than the one you're using, including the administrator account.

Cain & Abel should only be used by more experienced users because of its more complicated setup and other advanced features.

Do you know what your pen drive can do other than transferring data?

1. Mini Operating systems Yeah!! You can carry a portable operating system on your pen drive which will help you log into any PC with your own password and fix the crashes. There is a long list of available options though it will invariably be a flavor of Linux. To make your job easier I would recommend a visit to pendrivelinux.com and here.

2. Virtual Machine You can turn your pen drive into a virtual PC by installing portable virtualization softwares like Mojopac. It will help you carry your files and softwares with ease.

3. Security on the move There are a host of security related applications that can fit in your pen drive and thus travel with you. Thus your data will always be secured whether or not the host PC has an anti-virus or spam guard. Avast Virus Cleaner, ClamWin, and McAfee Avert Stinger are some of my recommendations.

4. Portable Applications Virtually every software today has a portable counterpart. Right from web development to design to messengers to games, there is nothing that is not available in the portable form. You can stuff some of these in your pen drive and work on the move without actually having to carry your laptop everywhere. One can get a whole list of such applications and details on pendriveapps.com or portableapps.com.

5. Value addition There are certain applications which if installed on the pen drive can help it serve you better. These are thus value addition softwares. Pendrive.com lists a few of them here while Snapfiles offers these. For data recovery from a pen drive, one can go for applications like Pro data Doctor or Memory stick data Recovery or Restoration.

Now Make your face your password

Have you ever wondered creating your own facial password like the matrix film or the Lenovo Advertisement? Well it’s time to make your own security system with keylemon. Facial recognition is not all about buying a high tech surveillance system but a simple webcam and some blocks of programs would help you build up your own face recognition security system.

How to setup your face recognition security?

By downloading keylemon and with a good quality webcam, your security system is not far away. After installation, the program acts as a default authentication system for your computer requiring your facial expression to be your password.

How does it work?

It collects your facial features by a webcam which is used to build a statistical representation of face and does stores it in binary format for execution and detection. This spyware free program which gives a lot concern for your privacy stores your image in encrypted format meaning no third party programs can access it.

The backend of this program seems like it can support all webcams launched way back to 2 years but the application is still in beta stage. keylemon has released its version only for windows platform where Mac users have to wait a bit. I myself tried the program which sits lite in the system and unlocks quickly after showing my face but the cons is it doesn’t allow multi-user support as far now.

How to add search to firefox password manager

If you save your usernames and passwords in Firefox you accumulate a huge list after time. That’s the case for me and I sometimes have to lookup a password because I can’t remember it correctly. The default Firefox Password Manager however offers such a rudimentary interface that it takes ages to find the website that I’m looking for.

There is no search and domains are sorted alphabetically starting with IP addresses and ending with https urls. If I want to find a password I first have to look for the urls with http which gives me several options, the site could be listed with its IP address, without www or with www. Then I have to do the same for https urls.
Password Finder is a Firefox add-on that adds a search box to the Password Manager of Firefox. Simply start typing numbers or letters and all matching results (sites that is) will be displayed while all others are hidden.

Beware ! before you click I Accept

How many times have you clicked “I Accept” to the terms and conditions on a website without reading the contractual small print?

Now, Dr Sal Humphreys -- an Internet communities expert from Queensland University of Technology in Australia -- warns you could be allowing online companies to install spyware onto your computer or use your personal photographs for commercial purposes. Dr Humphreys said many people may unknowingly sign away their privacy and intellectual property (IP) rights.

“By blindly accepting the terms and conditions, which are legal contracts, people may be agreeing to things they would normally consider unacceptable,” she said. “People tend to ignore the contracts they have ‘accepted’ until something goes awry.” Humphreys stressed that the world is changing from a society regulated by governments to a society, which is controlled by corporations that run for a profit.

As an example, she cited the Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) World of Warcraft (WoW), which is played by millions of people around the world. “The WoW contract states that the developer can access the user’s computer and is allowed to install spyware onto the hard drive to track what they do,” she said. “The developer claims the spyware, which must be installed for the game to work, helps to detect cheating and black-market selling of ingame currency, but there is privacy breaches that the players may have unknowingly agreed to that are a cause for concern.”

Humphreys said many online publishers encourage players to create their own content, but their contracts state that anything created in the game or posted on a company’s website becomes the property of the publishers. “The current terms and conditions for Facebook state that all user content posted on the site could be used by the company for purposes including advertising, and may be retained in archives, even after the user has deleted it from their profile,” she said.

Dr Humphreys said online corporations were often not accountable for their treatment of users. “The Second Life contract states that users own the IP rights to their in-world creations, but they could still be kicked out of the game for no reason, and if they own a lot of virtual property that is worth a lot of real-life money, they could lose it all with very few mechanisms for appeal,” she said.
