The unnamed man, a Kinokawa city government employee in western Japan, was, ahem, surfing madly from June 2007 to February 2008. Despite the frequency of his visits, none of his co-workers noticed anything untoward as, city official Tomiko Waki noted, "Each desk is set apart from each other."
What clued his bosses into the problem? Increased network traffic? Bills on city credit cards? Nope, it was a virus picked up along the way. Along with the demotion, he received a $190 monthly pay cut, Waki said.
Lesson to be learned: if you're going to do this, make sure your antivirus software is up-to-date, work PC or no work PC. Oh, and Kinokawa probably ought to install filtering software on his PC.
