If you are a Gmail user then you need not to create an account on Knol,You can login using your Gmail user ID.After that you can write article on any topic, one important difference between Knol and Wikipedia is that Wikipedia can only have one article on one topic but on Knol a particular article can have more than one entry means multiple articles by different users on same topic,Google says its a nice way to share knowledge in this way.
Google Knol asks the user to verify itself, though it is not necessary to do so but it is recommended since this will add verified label next to your knol articles adding more creditability to them unlike Wikipedia and one more important thing is that you can also monetize your knol pages by using adsense, so you can also earn while sharing knowledge with the world.
