How to share a internet connection using vista

Some of you might have one internet connection and more than one system at home.So you might be interested in sharing the single internet connection between the two systems rather than using separate internet connection for each system which is quite costly.

Let’s assume there are two computers A and B. Computer A runs on Windows Vista and Computer B runs on Windows XP.

Computer A is connected to Internet via cable, so this will be connected through a LAN card. Now to connect computer B, you will need another LAN card in computer A or if you want to connect to more than one computer, you will need a wired hub.

How to connect two systems in LAN:

Step 1: In Vista, before doing this you should enable Sharing and Discovery. You can do that by going to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center. Under the section ‘Sharing and Discovery , enable Network discovery, File Sharing, Public folder sharing and others if you want to.

Step 2: If your LAN card that is connecting to another computer is installed, it will be shown under Control Panel -> Network Connections.

Step 3: Right click that local area connection and click properties.

Step 4: Under the tab ‘Networking’, click the properties Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) .

Step 5: Click the radio button to ‘Use the following IP’ and give an IP address (For example, IP address: 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0)

Step 6: Don’t give any other information, Click Ok and close everything.

Step 7: In computer B, make sure you enable the LAN card which is used to connect to computer ‘A’. Here you need not give any IP information as Computer ‘A’ will assign an IP address dynamically. If it is not working make sure there are no IP assigned and change the properties to ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’.

Step 8: Test the connection by pinging. (You can do this by typing ping 192.168.0.1 or whichever is Compter ‘A’s IP in the comand prompt)

Sharing the internet connection:

Right click LAN card which is connected to Internet under Control Panel -> Network Connections and click ‘Sharing’ tab and enable both the options to share Internet. (Note: Unless there is another enabled LAN setting you will not be able to see the shared tab under properties)

Click Ok and close. This option is given by the Windows OS known as ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Now you can use Internet from both Computer A and Computer B from a single connection.

Who is watching you in local network

If you are connected in a local network then there are chances that a user might use your computer. That user might access as well as modify your file and settings.

So there is a need that you keep an eye over them. So here is a command by which you can keep track of all the computer connected to you and using your computer now.

For this first go to DOS and then type the command NETSTAT and press enter. You will get the desired information. But if you want to know them regularly then you can select time option as well means you will get the output after the time interval that you have specified. For this write NETSTAT time in seconds in command prompt.Like if you want to get output after 5 seconds then write the command like this NETSTAT 5.This will generate an output after 5 seconds again and again.

Vista incomparison to Xp

Now a days whole tech world is talking about microsoft's upcoming product Vista the new operating System from Microsoft after windows Xp.i have already posted in my blog about the
flaws discovered in Vista but the hard work from Microsoft is not waste. Here is the list of new
improved or newly added features in the Vista.

Antispyware:

Months before release of Vista the fear of disappearence was there for Antispyware industry which is nearly $155 million. This Antispyware"windows defender" is the reason of fear for this Anti spyware industry.

Windows Defender is the built-in spyware blocker bundled in Windows Vista .Windows defender was also available as free stand alone application form past few months only to genuine windows user.(require atleast windows installer version 3 for installation). So a good move towards security of personal data of users over internet.

Windows Aero:

This is going to provide greater looks and feel to windows user having a higher (Direct x 9.0 or above) graphics card. This feature allows users to view a 3D view of open window.

Windows Search :

One of the most helpful new features in Windows Vista, is the new, vastly improved search for files or applications from almost any corner of the computer Unlike in Windows XP, with Window Search, you can simply type a few letters of your search request, and the results appear on the fly ,a very helpful feature when looking for a file or application from the Start menu. Micosoft was getting strong competetion in this field from Google's Desktop search software.

Booting enhancements :

The NT Boot Loader present in XP has been replaced by Windows Boot Manager. Vista does not allow storing users' own as well as application files in Windows installed boot drives such as C drive for security reasons, for users, including the administrator.

Parental Control over net and system:

Microsoft has also given an answer to parents call to protect their children from objectionable content on net or system though there are a number of software applications available now a days that allow parents to keep control over their childs Internet activity, but Vista packs this feature in the OS itself.
The feature called Parental Control, which was not present in the Windows XP.This will allow parents to control their children's PC activities without a fuss. In fact, parents will be delighted with Vista's ability to block objectionable content.

The controls will allow them to act as a computer administrator and set specific boundaries for other users, including separate standard user accounts for family members, especially children. They can set rules like which sites a certain user can, or cannot, access and hours during which a particular user can use the computer.

They can also curtail access to specific applications and view where other users have been on the computer and on the Web.

We also have another new faetures for the another discussion later.......
