Though most of the software that are going to make any change in registry allows you to back up your systems registry before making any change in it because if any thing goes wrong during the process and makes the system unstable then you can use the back up and can make your system stable.But do you know the Windows Registry is never backed up and restored whenever system restore point is created or restored? The default export registry function in Registry Editor doesn't save all the registry settings (example, the SECURITY settings). Since they are backed up, they can't be restored.
It has also become impossible to copy the necessary files, now called "hives" and usually named DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE,SYSTEM in the SYSTEM32\CONFIG folder, to another location because they are all in use by the OS.
In short you cannot restore the settings since the exported file is only merged in the Registry and the previous settings are not deleted which have been added since the export.
So if you want more control over this issue then you can use ERUNT. It is a freeware and can restore the Registry even from MS-DOS. It runs on most of the Windows platform including Windows Server 2003, but doesn't supports Vista.
It can restore the registry in Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/2003/XP and MS-DOS. It also includes a Windows Registry optimizer. To ensure proper operation of ERUNT, you should be logged in as a system administrator.
You can also block your registry editor and don't let the suspicious software touch your system registry and a simple advice to all readers that always take backup at regular interval of time because precautions are always better.
